HETEROSITE    E.E. Smith Mine, Alexanderia, NH
2.7 cm specimen

Species:           HETEROSITE   (Fe3+,Mn3+)[PO4]
Locality:          E.E. Smith Mine, Alexanderia, NH
Specimen Size: 2.7 cm specimen
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer - 2006
Catalog No.: 1539
Notes: The deep purple color of heterosite is just evident in the top portion of the specimen. A brief dip in muriatic acid would allow the bright purple color to come out. This is the appearence of heterosite as a collector would find it on a mine dump.

HUREAULITE    E.E. Smith Mine, Alexanderia, NH

HUREAULITE    E.E. Smith Mine, Alexanderia, NH
Zoom view

Species:           HUREAULITE   (Mn,Fe)5H2(PO4)4·4H2O
Locality:          E.E. Smith Mine, Alexanderia, NH
Specimen Size: The upper right quadrant xl is 0.5 mm
Field Collected: Dana Jewell - 1992
Catalog No.: A Bob Wilken specimen
Notes: [bw] Top view is a general view showing several masses. Unfortunately it's difficult to determine any xl consistency. This is a deceptive photo because of the loss of 3-D. The 0.5 mm xl is fairly deep in the vug whereas the other masses are higher up on the surface. The same small xl is much clearer and distinct in the zoom view photo. Analysis needed to confirm visual identification.

JAHNSITE    E.E. Smith Mine, Alexanderia, NH
3.0 mm fov.

Species:           JAHNSITE    (group)
Locality:          E.E. Smith Mine, Alexanderia, NH
Specimen Size: 3.0 mm fov.
Field Collected: Dana Jewell - 1992
Catalog No.: A Bob Wilken specimen
Notes: [bw] Very raggedly terminated xls. They look like a composite of parallel fibers which make you wonder if they are whitmoreite. The consistency with which these fibers glom together (twinning?) to form a compound xl resembling the general shape of a classic jahnsite xl leads me to believe it is just that. Second, the close association and intermixing with rockbridgeite is another reason to believe it jahnsite. Third, the tendency to terminate raggedly is often seen on jahnsite crystals. Analysis needed to confirm visual identification.

MUSCOVITE pseudomorph after garnet    EE Smith Mine, Alexandria, NH
1.2 mm muscovite pseudomorph after garnet
Species:           MUSCOVITE pseudomorph after garnet   KAl2AlSi3O10(OH)2
Locality:          EE Smith Mine, Alexandria, NH
Specimen Size: 1.2 mm muscovite pseudomorph after garnet
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer
Catalog No.: u754
Notes: I was initially quite confused by these pale yellow garnet-like crystals. Their hardness is only 2 to 3. An EDS analysis indicated the species was muscovite. Brown-pink garnets are often nearby on specimens with these yellow pseudomorphs.

MUSCOVITE pseudomorph after garnet    EE Smith Mine, Alexandria, NH
7 mm field of view. Fully altered and partially altered garnets.
Species:           MUSCOVITE pseudomorph after garnet
Locality:          EE Smith Mine, Alexandria, NH
Specimen Size: 7 mm field of view. Fully altered and partially altered garnets.
Field Collected: Tom Mortimer
Catalog No.: u755
Notes: Pair of garnets altered to greenish mica on left, Slightly altered reddish garnet on right. Staining suggests leaching of iron from garnets. Almandine garnets contain iron, muscovite does not.
